Zero Emission Branch Lines

Research for Modernisation

In cooperation with the Fachhochschule St. Pölten and Niederösterreich Bahnen, Molinari Rail has launched the ZENeba (Zero Emission Nebenbahnen) project, which is using the example of the Citybahn Waidhofen to focus on the evaluation and development of modernisation options for secondary railways in general.

Molinari Rail is developing and evaluating scenarios of infrastructure facilities for emission-free, automated operation on branch lines. Using the example of the Citybahn Waidhofen, a scientific basis is provided for well-founded decisions on the maintenance and renewal of branch lines. The cornerstones are energy demand calculations, design of storage technologies and capacities as well as charging infrastructures and grid connections with a focus on renewable energy sources.

Molinari Rail focuses on the development of sustainable energy concepts in the areas of vehicle configuration, traction, heating and cooling. The focus is on energy storage on the vehicle, charging infrastructure, storage technology and the generation and provision of renewable energy. The needs assessment will also take into account the ride comfort of the urban transport vehicle.

The project is funded by the Austrian Forschungsförderungsgesellschaft des Bundes (FFG) as part of the “Mobilität der Zukunft” programme.
